Getting started

How do I start?

Create your account, then take the short placement test. It decides which texts and daily words suit you. If you're new to Turkish, choose “I'm a complete beginner”. Your daily goal, the kind of Turkish you want to read and why you're learning are asked later, on the pages they change, and can be set anytime in your profile. Start learning →

What should I do each day?

Today shows your plan: carry on reading, review the flashcards that are due, and practice a phrase. Your streak grows on days you reach your daily goal, which you can change in your profile.

The AI tutor

What can the AI tutor do?

Explain any word, form or sentence you're reading, simplify, summarize or translate a page, and answer your follow-up questions. It also talks with you about any topic as Genius, and gives feedback on your pronunciation. Ask in English or Turkish; it answers in English, with the Turkish fully vowelled. Free accounts can ask 5 questions a day; Pro is unlimited.

How do I talk with Genius?

Open Genius and pick a topic (or type your own) and your level. Genius asks a question and brings in the topic's key words one at a time; tap a highlighted word to hear it or save it as a flashcard. By text, each reply counts toward your 5 AI questions a day on Free. By voice, tap the microphone once and just talk: Genius hears when you stop, answers aloud, and you can interrupt it. Voice has 10 minutes a month on Free and 300 on Pro, where you can also buy more (60 minutes for $2.40 or 300 minutes for $9.99); bought minutes last 12 months. Talk with Genius →

Is the AI always right?

It is very good at explaining vocabulary and grammar, but like any AI it can make mistakes. Its answers name the word, root and rule they rely on, so you can check them in the dictionary. For religious texts, treat its explanations as language help, not as rulings or commentary. The AI never changes the texts themselves.

Reading and the dictionary

How do I look up a word?

In the reader, hover over a word for a quick meaning, or click it for its root, form and dictionary entry. You can also search the dictionary in Turkish (with or without vowels) or in English.

What does the level on a word mean?

The A1–C2 pill on a word's card is an estimate of its level, from how common the word is: in modern Turkish (Wikipedia, news, subtitles and the web, from wordfreq by Robyn Speer, CC BY-SA 4.0) and in the classical books of our library, with modern usage counting twice as much. The 500 most common words are A1, then A2 up to about 1,450, B1 to 2,500, B2 to 3,500, C1 to 4,300, and rarer words C2. When a graded text opens, the word chosen for you is one at your level. It's a guide: a common word can still be hard, and some topic words are learned early. wordfreq →

Where do the vowels and translations come from?

Graded texts are written with full vowels and glosses. On library pages, Vowels and Translation are prepared by AI the first time someone asks for them; the AI never changes the Turkish text itself. Free accounts can prepare a few new pages a day.

Where do the library's texts come from?

Each text says so under its title. Original texts are the authors' own words: the classical books are in the public domain. Adapted texts are retold for learners from another work, which is named (and linked when the library has it). Texts written for learners are ours, written with AI help and checked for their level. Texts we take from others carry their license and credits.

Can I search inside the books?

Yes. The Library's search box finds titles and authors, and words in the text of every book you can open, your uploads included. One Turkish word finds all its forms (كتاب also finds الكتاب and بكتابه); a phrase in quotes is found as written; an English word searches the Turkish words with that meaning. This uses our word index, which can confuse words spelled alike without vowels. After those come related passages: pages about your search's topic even when they don't use its words, found by AI from their meaning, so they can be only loosely related. They come from the graded texts and the public library, not your uploads.

Can I read my own texts?

Yes. Upload a PDF, a photo of a page or a text file from the Library. Pages without usable text are read with OCR, which has a monthly allowance. Your uploads are private: only you can see them. Open the library →

Flashcards

How does reviewing work?

Words you save go into your review deck. Each time you remember a word it comes back later; if you forget it, it comes back sooner. Flashcards shows how many are due today.

Can I take my flashcards elsewhere?

On Pro you can export them as a file that Anki imports, from the Export page.

Plans and billing

What's the difference between Free and Pro?

Free includes the dictionaries, the library and reader, flashcards and all practice screens, with daily limits on AI help. Pro removes the limits, including on Genius conversations, and adds word studies, offline books and Anki export. Compare plans →

How do I cancel?

From Plan & billing, at any time. You keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for (or the end of your trial) and aren’t charged again. Your saved words and progress stay on the Free plan.

Where are my invoices?

On Plan & billing, with a receipt for each payment. To change your card, choose Update there.

Classes

Can I bring my teacher here?

Yes: choose Invite your teacher on Today or in your profile and enter their email. Teacher accounts are free, and when they accept you're in their class straight away. Once 3 students in the class are studying, you get 30 days of Pro as thanks (up to 3 times). Invite your teacher →

How do I join my teacher's class?

Ask your teacher for the class code and enter it on the Classes page. Your teacher then sees your level, streak and progress on the readings they assign.

I'm a teacher. How do I get an account?

Teacher accounts are free: create one from For teachers, or choose Start teaching if you already learn here. It's the same account, so you can switch between teaching and learning. For a whole school, send us a message below with the topic “Schools & teacher accounts”. Create a teacher account →
